The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge opened in 1951 and has served the needs of thousands of children and adults alike, offering a variety of enriching, recreational and educational opportunities for members of the La Cañada community and surrounding areas. The La Cañada Flintridge Community Center (LCFCC) Preschool is an extension of the Community Center, offering a half-day (with extended care options) program for children ages three through five. The school year begins in mid-August and ends in late May.
The LCFCC Preschool provides a warm, safe and nurturing atmosphere with a wide variety of age-appropriate activities designed to promote the social, intellectual, physical and emotional aspects of learning. Teachers create an environment for the children to learn through active exploration and discovery. Manipulative toys, creative experiences, group time, floor toys, blocks, paints, play dough, sand and yard play are examples of what is offered on a daily basis. Particular emphasis is placed on helping to develop social skills such as listening, talking, helping, sharing and negotiating.
Letters and numbers are introduced through various age-appropriate ways in each classroom program. A love of reading is encouraged with daily stories, parent guest readers, and a library cart that allows children to select and check out books on a regular basis. Weekly music, a garden program, seasonal activities such as a pumpkin patch, and special visitors including the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Reptile Family, and local Sheriff and Fire Departments provide for additional enrichment during the school year. A four-week Summer Camp Program is also offered in June and July.
Parents are asked to dress their children in play clothing that is easy for their child to manage, and that allows for comfort, safety and washability. Shoes should be appropriate for running, riding bikes and climbing.
Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be a part of their child’s experience at LCFCC Preschool. We believe that we can best meet the needs of our children by developing strong communication with our parents. Regularly scheduled parent-teacher meetings, a school newsletter, and daily information posted in the classrooms help facilitate this objective. Events such as Orientation Days, Father’s Saturday Morning and Mommy & Me parties provide opportunities for family participation. A very active and supportive Parent Board organizes many special activities, parent coffee socials, holiday events, and fundraisers throughout the year. Look for our annual Western Round-Up fundraiser in March, a day of games and fun for the whole family and surrounding community.
HEALTH & NUTRITION
Morning and afternoon snacks are included as part of our program. Our school is a NUT-FREE learning environment. This includes tree nuts and legumes.
To protect your child and other children, we ask you keep your child at home if s/he is exhibiting signs of illness. Parents may be called to pick up a child from school for health or safety reasons.
